Ten years of conversion of internal combustion cars and commercials into electric have resulted in small market penetration because the conversion offers less benefits than the original and often costs twice as much. Twelve years development of the Townobile buses convinced many that the 'purpose-built' engineering philosophy applies equally to computer cars and vans, which must initially be produced in small batches at competitive prices, and yet offer real advantages over petroleum-dependent volume production equivalents. With equal comfort and city performance, the small Townobiles offer more usable volume, small car manoeuvrability, improved access and convenience for a greater variety of people and goods payloads, lower owning and operating cost per year, and owner serenity from minimal maintenance and all-weather reliability.
