This paper describes two sets of operational trials which have been carried out to investigate particular aspects of battery electric vehicle use, in comparison with more conventional petrol or diesel engined vehicles. In the first trial, the energy used by battery electric, petrol, and diesel vans of one tonne nominal payload was measured under a variety of urban traffic conditions, when driven by different drivers and carrying different payloads. From the results, conclusions are drawn on the special characteristics of the battery electric van which give some guidance as to where it is likely to find its most useful application. In the second trials, the speed and acceleration characteristics of the battery electric van and its petrol equivalent were measured as they were driven in urban traffic. These measurements trow some light on possible differences in the driving patterns of electric and conventional vans, and give guidance on the kind of regulartory driving cycle (like the ECE 15 urban cycle or the SAE J227 (a) driving cycle for electric vehicles) which is needed to enable realistic estimates to be made of the practical daily range which an electric vehicle can operate on one battery charge.
