Nearly half a million miles of operational experience in high performance traffic-compatible electric vehicles and with the pace now quickening to 350000 miles per year we at 'southern electricity' can speak to fleet oprators with authority and confidence - telling them that numbers of electric vehicles can be introduced into their operational service now and give them efficiency the equal of petrol or diesel engined equivalent vehicles. Cost comparisons do not show clear financial benefits for the high performance electric vehicle at present, though whole-life vehicle costs and future price projections for electricity and oil present a different picture and strongly favour electric vehicles. But we do have short corporate memories - several times in the last decade the use of road transport has been threatened or actually curtailed owing to a variety of reasons beyond our control. This often led to situations where the primary end-product of industrial or commercial organisations has been threatened by a lack of road transport. Under these circumstances the value of road transport being available in an alternative form, not the cost, became the primary concern. High performance electric vehicles can be introduced into many fleets now and provide a viable alternative.
