The world oil crisis has been stimulating an intensive research on alternative sources of energy and to improve the efficiency of existing systems. Losses occur during a normal vehicle braking, when the major part of its kinetic energy is dissipated by friction brakes. If the cycle of vehicle operation (acceleration, steady state and braking) is very frequent, there will be much energy loss. This is what happens with urban passenger vehicles. A flywheel incorporated to the vehicle to store energy, can recover part of the energy that would be dissipated during braking. This energy recovery is achieved by increasing the flywheel speed during braking. The flywheel returns energy to the vehicle during the next acceleration period. Another important advantage of the flywheel utilization is the possibility of keeping almost constant the power demand of an external supply of electric energy. In this paper, the mathematical model utilized to simulate the performance of a hybrid vehicle, similar to a trolleybus, is presented, as well as some of the results of the simulations.
