Technical feasibility of a microprocessor based traffic survey has been established. Future research plans include development of strong impact resistant housings for the lane transmitters, associated antennae, and suitable sensors for vehicle detection. Extensive traffic surveys are required to optimize traffic signal settings and thus reduce air pollution and also reduce consumption of liquid fossil fuel. The authors propose an automated system utilizing microprocessor control and radio transmission of data to replace the present manual 'hand' counts and pneumatic machine counts.
