INMARSAT plans call for the initial deployment of second generation satellites in 1988; by the end of 1991, transition to the new satellites should be complete. This paper discusses major aspects of INMARSAT's second generation space segment including procurement options, schedule, capacity requirements and major communications performance characteristics. Unique design features aimed at permitting the introduction of safety services and communications with aircraft as well as expansion of high speed ship-to-shore data communications capabilities are also described.
