Automotive electronic control systems containing many sensors abound on today's cars. However, we are still limited by our relatively modest ability to provide otherwise sophisticated mircoprocessor control systems with information about the physical world in and around the vehicle via sensors. This paper reviews specific needs for automotive sensors in the future. Areas where progress has been made are recognized, and areas in which research of the future will concentrate are discussed. Three key technologies will impact the entire field of sensors - integration, intelligence and optics. Advantages, early examples and projections for each technology are given.
