This paper deals with properties of recursively generated pseudo random numbers and their influence on traffic simulations. In particular, the uniformity of the distribution of such random numbers and their independence of preceding values are investigated on the basis of group theory. An upper limit for the maximum number of independent random events in traffic simulations which can be produced by arbitrary random number generators with finite cycle length is derived. Furthermore, criteria for the dimensioning of recursive random number generators are presented. The influence of the properties of random numbers on traffic simulations is illustrated in examples.
