Airborne remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs) are a cost effective means of undertaking a number of military tasks such as reconnaisance and surveillance. For these tasks the RPV can be conceptualised as having a nadir-mounted steerable sensor package transmitting real-time imagery to a Ground Control Station containing a Commander, Air Vehicle Controller and Imagery Interpretet. The use of a steerable sensor provides a number advantages; it allows greater ground coverage, it permits the RPV to have a stand-off capability, and it permits control of the sensor independently of the flight of the RPV itself which can lead to reduced target search times. However this can result in unusual image orientations. The aim of the experiment reported in this paper was to design a display to aid Image Interpreters and Air Vehicle Controllers to determine target bearing in imagery provided by RPVs equipped with steerable sensors. Response times and errors were measured on a performance task which involved viewing a tank-like target on a television screen and determing the bearing of the tank gun. The optimum image orientation for performce of this task was also investigated.
