The introduction of a network of computerised point-of-sale business machines into the premium parcels office of British Rail Stations is being investigated. A prototype despatch office machine has been constructed and is undergoing trials at Birmingham (New Street) Station. A prototype collection office machine has been constructed and will shortly be installed, for trial purposes, at Manchester (Piccadilly) Station. Equipment has also been constructed such that these two prototype systems can be linked via a telephone data line to a central computer. This equipment will form an elementary network which will be used to assess the benefits of a fully computerised premium parcels network. This paper describes this netowrk and assesses the potential benefits. It also describes the experimental equipment. TIB-Eingnag:4.84
