Battery powered unmanned aircraft offer several advantages over those with more conventional propulsion systems. The advent of modern lithium cells of high specific energy has made thes advantages realisable. Using high rate lithium-sulphur dioxide C size cells, aircraft have been developed which will carry a 3 kg disposable payload a distance of 26 km and have a duration of nearly one hour. Machines to lift over 15 kg a distance of 70 km have been designed and built.
