This paper describes the use of a stabilized 14 /12 GHz satellite telephone terminal for offshore communications. The planning activity associated with the implementation of the system is described and plans for future commercial service are discussed. This trial involved the participation of Newfoundland Telephone, the Government of Canada Department of Communications/Communications Research Centre (CRC), Memorial University of Newfoundland and Mobil Oil Canada Ltd. The trial is scheduled to commence in early 1983, and hence test results are not yet available. This paper will therefore focus on the planning aspects associated with this trial; the results of the trial will be reported in a future paper.
