The feasibility of automating the steering of a tractor when ploughing and turning at the headland has been demonstrated. The automatic lifting and lowering of the plough out of and into work at the appropriate times has been implemented as also has the automatic rotation of e reversible plough. Contactless following of a plough furrow has been shown to be reliable in a wide range of conditions. A high level of reliability of resumption of ploughing after a turn has been achieved in field trials but operating problems have arisen during these manoeuvres. They derive from the extreme difficulty of predicting the interaction of the tractor and implement combination with the soil surface particularly when this is irregular. Their solution, to ensure the reliability essential for unattended farm operation will not be an easy task.
