Spaceborne SAR systems being considered by NASA for remote sensing research in the next decade will make new and challenging demands on the antenna subsystem. The purpose of his paper is to identify some of the antenna technology requirements posed by these next-generation SAR systems. NASA's initial entry into the field of spaceborne SAR imagery came in June 1978 with the launch of Seasat whose L-band imaging radar used a 10.7 m x 2.2 m planar array of horizontally-polarized microstrip elements to illuminate and record the echoes from the earth's surface at a fixed 22 degree incidence angle. Three years later, in November 1981, NASA launched the space shuttle Columbia (STS-2) which carried the Shuttle Imaging Radar-A (SIR-A). SIR-A imaged 35 million sq. km. of the earth's surface in a mere eight hours of operation. Like Sesat before it, SIR-A was an L-band horizontally-polarized SAR, except that the incidence angle was changed to a fixed 47 degree angle.
