Broadband measurements of known dielectrics and tile samples were performed, and simultaneous single frequency slotted line data were obtained to evaluate system accuracy. A cross-section of the Shuttle tile samples is shown. Also is shown the measured dielectric data for nylon, and the dielectric constant and loss tangent data for a new unused tile and a tile from the first mission (STS-1). Samples of tiles exposed to more than one mission will be measured in the future. In conclusion, a system has been developed which can perform accurate measurements of complex permittivity as a function of frequency over waveguide bandwidths. Broadband permittivity measurements of Shuttle tiles indicate negligible changes due to first mission reentry exposure.
