A description is given of the Software Quality Assurance (SQA) program established to assure the production of reliable software for the European manned space laboratory, Spacelab. The various techniques and tools that were used are described and a short assessment of the effectiveness of each is given. A review is made of future trends in SQA programs for European space projects especially with regard to the use of automatic tools for quality control purposes.
