Inmarsat is bring about a revolution in ship management techniques. Ship owners or operators may now have direct access to their fleet to improve their efficiency. Information relating to vessel performance, fuel economy, machinery, vessel cargo, vessel routines, weather and safety may be obtained in a near real-time mode. The improved communications via Inmarsat will provide the vessel master with much more information on which to base his decisions. The shipboard Automated Information Services will sense the necessary data, process it in a timely manner, and present it in such a manner as to improve the efficiency of a ship owner's or operator's fleet and maintain the autonomy of a vessel's Master.
