The Ministry of Defence, and thus the Military, are now keen to exploit the weight, size, bandwidth capacity, TEMPEST, EMI, EMP and nuclear hardening advantages which fibre optic systems provide. The Military already have a number of operational systems using fibres. For security reasons only some of the UK Military applications have been included in this paper. MOD may appear to be lagging the USA in the quantity of Military fibre applications but we are convinced that the quality of our Military systems are at least as good as, if not better than theirs. We, in the MOD, are now aware that fibre systems have arrived and are here to stay. Our intention is now to exploit fibre technology in the field of Military applications.
