The paper also presents a mathematical model of battery performance, suitable for computer solution, which uses a non-linear charging efficiency as a function of temperature, charge rate and state-of-charge. This model provides the basis for the quasi-automatic management of battery state-of-charge. Due to many uncertainties in battery behavior, the predictive limitations of the model are fully recognized. Key adjustability factors are identified which, in a practical operational sense, are periodically modified by ground as determined by ground simulation tests, review of flight data, and other appropriate information. The ampere-hour measurement system permits relatively unattended operation of spacecraft batteries, with occasional adjustment of charge parameters as dictated by flight performance trends. A significant aspect of using this system is that it reduces the risk of accidental over-discharge.
