This paper describes the operation, function, and testing of the Range Prediction Device (RPD) developed under the sponsorship of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The RPD provides the electric vehicles (EV) driver with a real-time estimate the remaining vehicle driving range. Testing of RPD prototypes has been conducted at the Electric Vehicle Test Facility operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The invehicle testing of the RPD was designed to evaluate the device's performance under field conditions, and to identify the need for design modifications.
