In 1972, the U.S. Government contracted with TRW to design and build an advanced communications satellite to provide worldwide communications for the U.S. Navy and Air Force from a network of geostationary satellites (Contract No. F04701-82-C-0007). The specifications for this contract included hardenability against nuclear attack, advanced communications capabilities, and a 5-year service lifetime. Today, four of those satellites are fully functional in orbit and a fifth is partially operative, having suffered damage to the solar arrays and RF antennae during launch operations. More than 140.000 satellite-hours (through 1 August 1983) have been logged by the first four satellites, and the critical electrical power subsystem components are performing well above minimum required levels. In the future, two modified satellites will carry an experimental communications payload that will operate in the EHF range. This paper will identify the power subsystem modifications that were made to the original power subsystem design to accommodate that package. Comparisons are also made between the original design phase performance expectations and the actual performance as determined from flight data, with emphasis on battery-control methods.
