A NASA sponsored study of space power distribution system technology is in progress to develop a high voltage high power spacecraft power subsystem test bed that demonstrates autonomous operation. Pursuant to test bed development, the technology needs for a battery cell scanner that could operate with a 220 Vdc power bus were derived. This paper submits the design and test results of a high voltage battery cell scanner that satisfies the proposed high voltage requirements and operates in conjunction with a microprocessor based autonomously managed power system. The battery cell scanner is modular which allows for expandable operation up to 400 Vdc. Each module has a digital interface which provides for high voltage isolation while operating on a common input/output bus. Reference voltages are also provided for cell data calibration using the onboard microprocessors. The module provides fast, accurate measurements of both positive and negative cell voltages and employs LSI technology to reduce parts count.
