The General Electric Company has been developing solid polymer electrolyte fuel cells and water electrolyzers for space applications since the early 1960's. Recently, NASA sponsored the design and fabrication of a breadboard regenerative fuel cell (RFC) system, using available fuel cell and electrolysis cell designs to demonstrate the feasibility of using this technology as an energy storage system for a space station application. This breadboard system completed the scheduled checkout testing and has now been delivered to NASA. The system design and operation is described and the results of system testing is summarized. The results of a preliminary system study are also presented showing estimated system weights as a function of overall energy storage efficiency for space station-type requirements.
