In summary of the Viterbi decoded and sequentially decoded link performance results for an EHF, encoded 2400 bps, DBPSK satellite communications link, it was shown long constraint length codes (K = 25 to 30) with sequential decoding did not provide any significant performance improvement over the short constraint length code with Viterbi decoding. Specifically, the Viberti decoded link out performed the sequentially decoded systems for bit error probabilities greater than 10-5 in the moderately fast, moderately slow and slow fading channels. However, in slow scintillated signal fading channels the Vibert. decoded link advantage diminished as . the sequentially decoded systems approached their theoretical limits of performance at bit error probabilities less than 10-5. Finally, sequential decoder computations required to decode a single bit of data caused longer decoder bit processing time delays in comparison to the Viterbi decoded link for bit error rates greater than 10-5.
