Methods of calculating a.c. traction system overvoltages caused by harmonic distortion in the locomotive current waveforms are described. A comparison is made between the results of an analgue simulation and measurements obtained during a site test. The critical parameters affecting the overvoltages are identified and methods of suppression are discussed. Recommendations for further research into the subject are made.
