The essential results of a feasibility study on a SYNTHETIC APERTURE RARAR FACILITY (SAR-FACILITY) for a Shuttle/Spacelab Mission are presented in this paer. The SAR-Facility is an experimental microwave radar, designed to be flown on a Shuttle mission, featuring several modes of operation. Its planning is part of the long term German Remote Sensing Programme and it is aimed at bridging the gap between the 'Microwave Remote Sensing Experiment', developed for the first Spacelab flight, and a fully operational satellite-born SAR, which is at present under investigation. s The goals of the SAR-Facility programme amount to the following: 1) determine the main applications possibilities of an operational system 2) introduce, activate and inform the user community 3) fix design parameters according to users' demands (the latter will be established from the results of instrument operation in several modes) 4) contribute to research in radar signatures by monitoring large areas 5) appropriate choise of design parameters for the operational system 6) continuance of SAR development and 7) identify necessary technological R and D for an operational system. The SAR-Facility, as a Shuttle experiment, provides the best and most cost effective basis for development of a technically mature and effective microwave sensor. Aspects related to any satellite accomodation of such a system can be investigated at a later date.
