The advantages of using Kalman filtering techniques in microcomputer monitoring and control applications are illustrated by a simple example. A single state linear discrete Kalman filter is used to predict and monitor automobile gasoline mileage on a tank-to-tank basis. Alarms are generated to alert the user to sudden or gradual deterioration of the gasoline mileage. A possible application using automated input data acquisition sensors is discussed.
