It was desired to develop a digital cruise control which performed at least as well as its analog counterparts. This required the development of a speed measuring system consistent with the features available in a low cost microprocessor without adding extensive external hardware and which met the following criteria: 1. Measure the vehicle speed more often than once per second. 2. Measure the vehicle speed with a low resolution sensor. 3. Measure the vehicle speed with enough resolution so that errors from the calculation of acceleration were no longer the dominant cause of poor performance. The algorithm developed waseasily implemented in a COP 422 processor and enough code was left over to provide the driver with useful trip and instrumentation functions. In addition, the cruise control performance was improved significantly over previous designs.
