Determination of the reliability, cost, and weight of systems which include imperfect redundancy, hardware/software/dissimilar replication and maintenance is extremly complex and has not in the past been addressed by existing general design and evaluation programs. A new software tool is presented which addresses these design problems. The Generalized Reliability and Maintanability Program (GRAMP) is a Markov based model which is used in the design and evaluation phases of fault-tolerant systems. The capabilities and advantages of this tool are discussed. Issues addressed include the synthesis approach, modeling assumptions and utilitiy of results for complex, redundant architectures becoming common in current high reliability operational configurations.
