This is the second of a two-part sequence of papers describing the design and performance of a 30 kVA, 400 Hz transistor inverter to furnish all loads, except propulsion power, on a small advanced urban transit vehicle - a people mover. With a nominal 750 V dc input, the inverter supplies 30 kVA at 0.8 lagging power factor, 200 V line-to-line RMS, 3-phase, 400 Hz output. PART I describes the power circuit, and this second part is concerned with the design and performance of the inverter control, including the details of the power transistor base drive circuit designs. After the base drive and other control circuits are described, photographs of the key waveforms are presented and discussed. The base drive circuit is a most crucial part of a reliable inverter system. A digital closed loop voltage control is used. The 200 kHz inverter rectified and filtered output is sensed and compared with a reference. The error signal then controls an up-down counter to adjust the pulse widths of each of the three half-bridge 20 kHz inverters to deliver a regulated dc input voltage to the six-step, three-phase transistor inverter supplying the 400 Hz output.
