Rationale governing selection of a space-craft electrical power subsystem topology for a given mission is generally developed from overall system requirements. A selected topology for a given contemporary spacecraft may be one of several that will satisfy mission requirements. With the continuing growth in required spacecraft capabilities for new programs, selection of cost effective, high power to weight ratio configurations will become more critical. Interrelationships between related spacecraft constraints, use of existing proven hardware or customer furnished equipment, and desired system performance will potentially take on a new dimension. This paper discusses factors and suggests trade study parameters that form the basis for evaluation of potential electrical power subsystem topologies.
