Several traffic intersections have been modelled in the course of development work. Models of two major traffic schemes in West Yorkshire have been used within the decision process leading towards implementation of each project. Simulated performance of one scheme proved consistent with that predicted through another program, known as Transyt, used to establish traffic signal phasing within the local Urban Traffic Control system. A series of detailed validation exercises, which are continuing, are helping to further establish confidence in the value of the model. It is, however, notoriously difficult to establish the validity of such models which necessarily contain wide statistical and temporal traffic variations. Various concepts leading towards the rationalisation of the program have been devised in conjunction with IBM. A more userorientated program, comprising restructured program elements designed to reduce run-time is consequently now being developed. The resultant more general use of the simplified simulation model should reveal further development requirements which will be tested and incorporated in a progressively enhanced model.
