Refueling costs for EV's appear to be within an acceptable range with HR being the least expensive and SFR battery exchange the most expensive. Fig. 6 shows the cost relationships among the various refueling methods. Based on the convenience, simplicity, and low operational cost advantages, HR appears to be a major source for EV refueling in the future. DR is a close second, since DR provides a similar convenience for people who do not have the opportunity for HR, such as urban apartment dwellers. With the adequate location of facilities DR has the potential for increasing the range of the EV. Also, DR may become cost competitive with HR if reduced electricity rates made possible with increased power usage are passed on to the EV owner. Recharging at a service facility is basically cost competitive with DR since in concept they are very similar, but SFR recharging is limited in the space available at the facility and therefore limited in the volume of EV's which may be recharged. Additional equipment for quick recharging increases the costs associated with SFR battery recharge.
