The propulsion subsystem (motor, motor controller, transmission and differential but excluding the battery) is a major factor in the purchase price and cost of ownership of an electric vehicle. Three propulsion system characteristics: efficiency, weight, and manufacturing cost influence price and operating cost as seen by the consumer. A study has been made of the relative impact of the three factors on the cost of buying and operating a traffic-compatible electric vehicle. The study concludes that propulsion system technology can result in a major reduction in the sticker price of an electric vehicle and a smaller, but significant, reduction in overall cost of ownership. The paper discusses the assumptions, methodology, and results of the study.
