This paper reviews the problems of testing complex electrical and electronic cables for short circuits and proper continuity. A technique is described for substantially automating and simplifying the task. The technique relies on: 1) a test set consisting of a multiplexing signal generator and voltmeter, both controlled by a microprocessor; 2) appropriate cable test software for the test set; 3) codifying the design of a set of cables in a manner compatible with the test software; and 4) a set of adapters which make it possible to interface the cable connectors with the test set and its support hardware. This technique has been implemented for a field portable test set. The software has the capacity to handle testing of hundreds of cables without needing reprogramming.
