GaAs sources have been developed with the required power output, stability, and life time that would permit them to be seriously considered for providing a relatively broad beamwidth beacon signal in the establishment of a laser beam high data rate communication link. Further the GaAs wavelength and received signal strength permit adequate discrimination from background signals for the beacon acquisition and lock-on during the high data rate signal transmission.
