Electric Energy is the most economical source of energy for some heavy haulage railway tasks in Australia. Wheel to rail transport is compared with road transport from an energy consumption viewpoint. Taking a sample typical heavy haulage task illustrates that electric haulage can be justified. By assessing the chain of investment from coal mining to the locomotives, electric locomotive haulage can be shown to involve local labour to a greater extent and decrease overall imports when compared with diesel-electric haulage.
