A model employing coupled transmission lines was developed to simulate the coupling of lightning generated electromagnetic energy into aircraft avionics systems and associated wiring. High voltage arc discharges which simulate lightning strikes were used to strike a simplified aircraft form (metal cylinder) and induce transients in the cylinder wiring. The model was used to study the essential mechanisms and dominant parameters of the coupling process both for natural lightning and for laboratory simulations. This was accomplished in a step-by-step development where good correlation between calculations and tests were first established for simple configurations before more detailed modeling was attempted.
