This paper has discussed the application of staring focal plane arrays for use in future infra-red guided missiles. The traditional theories of system sensitivity have been reviewed and alternative techniques, more appropriate to the staring focal plane arrays, have been introduced. The importance of system parameters in determining the performance achievable in practical sensors has been discussed and some of the methods used to determine system performance have been illustrated. The main message of this paper is that care must be taken in assessing the effectiveness of the new focal plane technology in missile guidance systems. Provided the practical limitations of these devices, in a missile environment, are understood then the early promise of small, high performance low cost seeker systems can be achieved in the next generation of missile systems.
