The maglev system test track constructed in Miyazaki Prefecture by Japanese National Railways (JNR), has a propulsion and guidance system that is a ground primary linear synchronous motor system consisting of ground coils for propulsion and guidance (GCPG) laid on the guideway. The GCPGs are installed in the open and are required to have resistance to all weather conditions. The GCPGs were manufactured and supplied to JNR by Hitachi and are molded of sheet molding compound (SMC) which is a kind of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP). Conical washers are used with the GCPG installation on the guideway to minimize changes of tightening force caused by compression creep of SMC. The GCPG has been ascertained to be reliably weather resistant and to have satisfactory electromagnetic force characteristics in the test bed. After repeated running tests at Miyazaki Test Track, test vehicle ML-500 achieved the highest running speed of 517 km/h in December 1979.
