Some military mobile communication systems are similar in operational concept to the commercial Improved Mobile Telephone Service (ITMS). To aid in the design of such a system, a modeling technique is described for application to tactical mobile telephone systems permitting subscriber access on a trunked basis to any of several central stations over a 50 x 100 km area. The model is a design tool in achieving performance and cost objectives, thus avoiding potential overdesign. The methodology, consisting of seven steps, is presented and applied to the derivation of an optimal system configuration.
