Four 130 kW induction motors and 1.500 V, 1,000 kVA inverter equipment were manufactured to investigate practical applications of induction motor driving systems. The following were revealed through the investigation including running tests with a test car. High adhesion coefficient is obtained. Therefore, it is possible to get an acceleration of 3.3 km/h/s with an MT formation, viz. a train of one motor-car and one trailer. Interferences with the signal circuit can be suppressed to the level of that in a chopper control system. Prospects is obtained for reducing the total weight of an inverter controller and induction motors to the same level as in a chopper control system. This system is likely to be used widely in future because of the communicatorless traction motor and small number of contactors.
