Rail transportation systems with good energy efficiency has received attention anew as a means of urban mass transportation. In fact plans for new rail cars and transportation systems are being implemented in different parts of the world. In addition to safety, these cars are required to provide lighter weight, lower noise, improved passenger comfort. In meeting these requirements, Hitachi recently developed a chopper controlled light weight mass transit car with air conditioning equipment, which has a tare weight of 3.15 t and an interior noise level of 6.3 dBA in the stationary car. The carbody structure was designed by strength analysis taking full advantage of the finite element method and safety was verified through severe load tests. Fire-retardant fiber reinforced plastics were used in various parts of the carbody, for weight reduction and improvement of production procedure. It is expected that this type of car will constitute the mainstay in future urban mass transit systems.
