The use of standard reinforcing steel in concrete guideways for Maglev systems poses serious problems because of the high eddy current loss in the steel due to the large time varying nagnetic fields of the cryogenic magnets. It is shown on this paper that these losses may be reduced to acceptable values by stranding the reinforcing steel and by making sure there are no closed loops in the reinforced system.
