The article describes the evolution and subsequent operation of a comprehensive digital simulation of a dynamic-positioning system for a semi-submersible vessel used in the marine and offshore industry. Choices of simulation method are considered (analogue, digital, hybrid) and a brief description given of the simulation language. A detailed description of the system in terms of mathematical models highlights its general complexity. Stages are outlined for the evolution of a digital simulation and some typical applications are mentoined. The article concludes with possible future trends including integration problems, digital simulation development and optimization techniques.
