At present, a number of pipe laying barges with many anchor winches have come into use to lay oil and gas pipelines on the sea bottom. This paper explains the Total Control System for a Pipe Laying Barge which has an automatic barge control subsystem (ABC), a safety pipe-playing subsystem (SPS), a target-position subsystem (TPS), etc. First, this paper presents an outline of the system. Then, special attention is given to the distribution of wire tension to each winch, which is one of the most important problems to be solved in designing the automatic barge control subsystem (ABC). Finally, the paper discusses the relation between decoupling and distribution, and introduces a new tension distributor.
