Two types of experimental laboratory, one manned and the other unmanned, will be carried into orbit by Shuttle. The first of these is spacelab which will provide a sleeve environment for up to four 'payload specialists' who will perform and oversee exerpiments mounted within Spacelab and 'out on the patio' where they are exposed to both the vacuum and the particle fluxes of space. All these experiments are attached to Shuttle, and will return with it at the end of a flight.
