The Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory (AFRPL) sponsored the design, fabrication, and testing of a prototype system capable of operating under the conditions encountered in space. The paper discusses program results and describes the application of the nucleonic propellant gaging technique to the space environment. The technique essentially consists of strategically arranged gamma ray sources and detectors that yield an average count rate from which the propellant mass may be directly computed. The gamma rays penetrate the tank walls, supporting structure, and propellant, if any, in order to reach the detector assembly and produce an output to the computer-controller unit. The output is proportional to the mass of material, i.e. the propellant.
