The requirements for structural steels intended for use in North Sea drilling platforms are determined by strength, fatigue and brittle fracture resistance as well as design and fabrication requirements. Satisfaction of these conditions necessitates strict composition and processing control in steel manufacture. The problem of lamellar tearing is particularly important. Progress has been made in developing steels resistant to lamellar tearing. Other developments concern hydrogen control and carbon equivalent control.
