The new Oberkasseler Bridge across the Rhine was constructed upstream from the old one, then moved into position when completed. Comprehensive tests showed the bridge design to be suitable, and the moving project feasible. Traffic was diverted across the new bridge while the old one was dismantled and the new permanent support piers constructed. The new bridge was moved 47,50 m sideways on Teflon bearings. The move was completed in two 6 1/2 hour sessions on 7 and 8 April 1976. Speed of travel was 60 mm/min. The bridge is 590,50 m long and weighs 12500 t.
